New ES-Convert supports restoring Helios files from Time Machine backups
Do you want to backup your HELIOS Server on Mac OS X with Apple Time Machine?
In addition to archiving and backing up to tape, e.g. with ES-Backup, it is good practice to backup a HELIOS Server including all its shared network folders with Time Machine. Important data will be available easily and quickly after a total loss or after unintended deletion.
ES-Convert helps you restoring HELIOS Server files out of Time Machine Backups!
Simply copying files from a Time Machine backup does not work. In order to restore HELIOS files entirely it is required to take care of the special HELIOS file format. Therefor ES-Convert extracts HELIOS data and resource fork files from the Time Machine backup and re-integrates them into HELIOS shared network folders.
ES-Convert offers GUI elements to directly navigate to HELIOS network folders. Additionally it is possible to browse back and forth in time – similar to the way Apple Time Machine does – in order to inspect the different state of folders and to quickly find and select the files to restore.

Sony AIT-5 tape drive certified for ES-Backup 4.0
After passing the UGSoft labs the Sony AIT-5/SDX-1100 tape drive was included in the ES-Backup compatibility list (see http://www.ugsoft.de/intl/esbackup/tapes.html).
This device can store up to 1 TB per tape cartridge and thus is an additional powerful tool for use with ES-Backup.
UGSoft's hardware certification procedures allow customers and resellers to choose appropriate backup devices for ES-Backup safely and easily.
Special installation scripts for ES-Backup in Solaris Zones
Starting with version 4.0.3 ES-Backup includes scripts for easy installation in Solaris Zones. This allows to integrate ES-Backup in highly sensible and secure server environments smoothly.
Encrypted network backups
By using safe date transfers based on ssh UGSoft has integrated in ES-Backup an additional feature already built into the operating system. These strong encryption and authentication procedures offer best safety available during backup and restore of network clients. ES-Backup 4.0 released
UGSoft has released the new data backup software ES-Backup 4.0 for Mac OS X, Solaris and Linux.
ES-Backup 4.0 offers a re-designed user interface and the possibility to verify backed up files with the original data on disk to ensure the backup media can be read and contains all requested data.
Assistants guide through the important tasks such as starting backup and restore operations and setting up scheduled backups. Users can choose a suitable backup strategy – daily, weekly or monthly full and incremental backups – from predefined settings and may customize them for special needs. Analyzation charts with amount of data to backup, backup duration and number of required backup media for each strategy help to decide on the most suitable strategy.
Attached backup devices are determined and setup according to the chosen backup strategy automatically.
The new tape library status display informs about tapes in changer slots, firmware revision levels and allows to move tapes between slots and tape drives manually.
ES-Backup 4.0 supports Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger and Panther on Intel and PPC processors, Solaris 8/9/10 on SPARC and Intel as well as Linux on Intel. The new version supports HELIOS UB+ file servers and a wide range of tape drives and tape libraries connected via SCSI, FireWire, USB and Fibre Channel, backup-to-disk and harddisk synchronization. Apple Time Machine volumes can be backed up the same was as mounted network volumes and local harddisks.
All functions are available on the local ES-Backup Server as well as on an unlimited number of network clients.
With prices starting at 476 Euro ES-Backup 4.0 is a effordable alternative for Retrospect on Mac OS X. Updates from previous versions are available from 178,50 Euro depending on product package. Local harddisk synchronisation is available in the ES-Backup demo version's Syncro Mode free-of-charge.
