Notes on ES-Backup up021, July 19th, 2002 Overview This document describes the contents and installation of the ES-Backup update up021 as of July 19th, 2002. up021 contents This update is made of 1 Unix compressed tar-archive used for updating ES-Backup 3.0.5 on Linux. NOTE: Do not install this update on any other version of ES-Backup than version 3.0.5. NOTE: The updated ES-Backup Server may be used with ES-Backup Admin 3.0.5 . The tar-archive includes the following files: esbdump This executable binary will be installed in the ES-Backup Server installation directory specified during the installation, in it's subfolder etc/ . This file has the version number 0.4b23l4. Changes incorperated with this update: - This update contains a fix for bugs in several Linux kernels where the disk inode cache was not updated correctly resulting for ES-Backup in not backing up all requested files. We can confirm these bugs in kernels 2.4.9 and 2.4.10 but they may happen in other kernels as well. Unfortunately the new call implemented with this update does NOT fix the problem in these kernels. We have tested this update with kernel 2.4.16 successfully. Thus it is recommended to use kernel 2.4.16 or newer. Additionally we have found some slow performance issues in smp kernels prior to 2.4.9 due to incorrect VM usage. Patch kernel-smp-2.4.9-34.i686.rpm (RedHat) seems to solve this problem. Thus it is recommended to use the latest smp kernels available for a specific Linux distribution. We cannot confirm these bugs in kernels 2.2.x. Server Installation Step 1 Unstuff the file "up021.sea.hqx" on your Macintosh, e.g. by using StuffIt Expander. A folder up021 will be created. For updating ES-Backup on: Linux copy the file "up021:Software:linux:up021_linux-int.inst.tar.Z" to an EtherShare volume. Continue with step 2 below. Step 2 As root user do the following from the Unix console: (make sure no user is connected to the ES-Backup server, stop the ES-Backup server) # cd YourESBackupInstallationFolder # ./stop-busrv # cp ESVOLUME/up021_linux-int.inst.tar.Z /tmp # cd /tmp # uncompress -c up021_linux-int.inst.tar.Z | tar xvf - (ESVOLUME is the path to your EtherShare volume) (The folder /tmp/ES-BACKUP-UP021 will be created) # cd /tmp/ES-BACKUP-UP021 (now call the update script) # ./UP021.SH (The update will be installed. Follow the installation instructions from the script) For more information, please refer to the ES-Backup manuals.
